Flag Hoisting and Celebrations Across the Nation

Republic Day is observed with great enthusiasm across the country. Flag hoisting ceremonies take place in schools, colleges, government offices, and public spaces. Patriotic songs are sung, and cultural programs are organized to instill a sense of pride and unity among citizens.

  • Kadmat: Stretching for 8 kilometers and measuring just 550 meters at its widest, Kadmat offers a unique landscape. The west side features a gorgeous shallow lagoon, perfect for indulging in water sports.
  • Minicoy: Standing apart from the main cluster of islands, Minicoy is situated approximately 200 kilometers south of the northern group. With one of the largest lagoons, it is home to a collection of 11 villages known as “Ava’h,” each overseen by an elected village elder known as Bodukak.
  • Kalpeni: Kalpeni, accompanied by two small islets, Tilakkam and Pitti, along with the uninhabited Cheriyam island in the north, collectively create a single atoll. Notably, Kalpeni features a unique aspect—a massive storm bank composed of coral debris along its eastern and southeastern shorelines.
  • Kavaratti: Serving as the administrative headquarters and the most developed island in the region, Kavaratti boasts a total of fifty-two mosques scattered across its expanse. Among them, the Ujra mosque stands out as particularly beautiful.

Attractions & Activities:

  • Shipwrecks: Minicoy stands out in Lakshadweep as the sole island featuring three noteworthy shipwrecks, thought to include the S.S. Hoechst and other vessels. These wrecks rest within an 8-meter depth on the island reef, forming captivating underwater museums.
    • Interestingly, the fish species in this vicinity are noticeably larger than their counterparts elsewhere, perhaps influenced by the presence of iron from the wrecks.

For those into deep-sea fishing, there’s an opportunity for big game fishing. You can also hire local boats with experienced crews to enhance your aquatic experience.

  • Scuba Diving: Kadmat is recognized as one of India’s most scenic diving destinations, hosting the first Laccadives Dive Centre and School. Offering courses for both beginners and advanced divers, the Laccadives Kadmat Dive School operates throughout the season, from October 1 to May 1. For diving enthusiasts, the Minicoy Dive Centre and Dolphin Dive Centre in Kavaratti are also top-notch options.
